From June 13th to 14th, the International College of Northwest A&F University organized the “Last Practical Lesson” for the 2025 graduating international students in Heyang. Nearly 20 international students from 10 countries including Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, India, Indonesia, and Tajikistan participated in this activity, which further promoted cultural exchanges between China and other countries, helped revitalize rural education, and allowed students to learn about China’s practical experience in rural poverty alleviation.

The international students first visited Nangou Village Primary School and Pozhao Primary School in Heyang, where they brought lively and interesting spoken English lessons to the children. In the classroom, the international students showcased their talents. ALAM SYED SHANE (Chinese name: 沙义) from India and EMERALDA EKA PUTRI SETYAWATI (Chinese name: 谢墨如) from Indonesia incorporated English expressions about lions, elephants, monkeys, and other animals into creative game matrices and animated teaching images. By combining interactive games, he analyzed the characteristics of animal habitats, making the English lessons full of fun.MAHARDIKA SURYA BAGUS (Chinese name: 苏尔雅) from Indonesia used “My Journey: From Indonesia to China!” as the main theme. With vivid language and rich multimedia teaching resources, she led students on a cross-border cultural journey. From Indonesia’s volcanic landscape and Borobudur’s history to the cultural symbolism of traditional sarongs and the use of verbs in international travel, children could feel the charm of different civilizations through immersive interaction. KHUDOYOROVA MANIZHA (Chinese name: 玛尼莎) from Tajikistan used the topics of clothing and colors for spoken English practice with the students. NOORIN SADIA (Chinese name: 沙迪) from Pakistan has been teaching English in Heyang’s primary schools for three years, having delivered over 120 hours of instruction through “online + offline” methods. As she was about to graduate and return home, she gave her last spoken English class to the students, after which the children were reluctant to say goodbye to her.

Afterwards, the international students went to the Nangou Village community in Heyang to learn about the development of the local grape industry. Tan Dongming, the first secretary of Northwest A&F University stationed in Nangou Village, said: “In recent years, our university has supported the development of the grape industry in Nangou Village through party-building, talent provision, technical support, and financial investment, which has enabled farmers to increase production and income.”

He highly affirmed the achievements of the international students’ teaching mission, which effectively improved the English proficiency of primary school students, broadened their international horizons, and received recognition from the local government, village schools, and students’ parents, thus promoting educational assistance. The international students were inspired by their alma mater’s initiatives and achievements in relying on its own resource advantages to help rural revitalization in Heyang, and they were pleased to realize their own self-worth in this process.

Cheng Shangzhi, Vice Dean of the International College, said, “Since the establishment of the International Students Teaching Group in 2021, the International College has organized a ‘Last Practical Lesson’ every year for the graduating international students in Heyang before they leave China at graduation season. In 2024, Nangou Village in Heyang was awarded the ‘International Students’ Social Practice and Cultural Experience Base for Rural Revitalization’ by the China Scholarship Council for International Students.Over the years, international students have developed deep ties with Heyang. Here, they not only teach, but also experience and grow themselves. In the process of promoting people-to-people exchanges between China and foreign countries, they have seen the results of China’s rural revitalization strategy and learned valuable practical experience in rural poverty alleviation. We hope that after graduation and returning to their home countries, they will continue to tell China’s stories and spread China’s voice.”
